Banana Yoga Turns Three: Five Lessons From a First-Time Studio Owner

Three years ago, Banana Yoga in Oakland grew out of what I used to call a "silly dream": to build a space where people could feel completely at home, grounded, and connected.

Since opening our doors in July 2023, the journey has been beautiful, humbling, and at times, incredibly challenging. This past April, we hit a financial rough patch so severe that I made the heartbreaking announcement we would need to close. Yet, here we are, celebrating our third anniversary.

Going from a first-time studio owner chasing her tail to running a sustainable business (sometimes even remotely from Costa Rica!) has taught me more than any business book ever could. Whether you are an entrepreneur, a yoga teacher, or a member of our beloved Oakland community, here are the five biggest lessons I’ve learned over the last three years.

1. If You Take Care of Your Community, They Will Take Care of You

From day one, Banana Yoga was built on affordable, friendly classes and a commitment to mutual aid—raising thousands of dollars for local nonprofits and global communities in war zones. Along the way, I was often told I should charge more. But raising prices to maximize profit never felt right.

When we faced closure this spring, the community proved that lead-with-love economics actually work. We received an overwhelming outpouring of support, and in a breathtaking act of generosity, a studio member offered us a loan to keep our doors open. It cemented my deepest belief: by taking care of others, we take care of ourselves.

2. Trade "Busy Work" for Sustainable Systems

When I started, I was managing everything and teaching 10 classes a week. I felt like a dog chasing her tail, completely unsure of what tasks actually moved the needle forward.

Over a two-year process of trial and error, I stopped trying to do it all in real-time. I started tracking repetitive tasks and either scheduled, delegated, or automated them. By fine-tuning our Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), I shifted my focus to what actually makes the studio successful rather than just staying busy. Today, those systems are so solid that I can seamlessly manage day-to-day operations and marketing whether I am on the ground in Oakland or working remotely from Costa Rica.

3. Class Packages Are a Liability (Embrace Memberships Instead)

This was the hardest financial lesson I had to learn: every class package sold is a promise of future services, not stable income. Relying on packages makes cash flow unpredictable and creates a lingering balance sheet liability.

To build a resilient business without compromising our values, I shifted our focus to affordable monthly memberships. This gave the studio a predictable, recurring revenue stream while keeping our pricing accessible and supportive for our members. It’s a win-win that protects both the business and the community.

4. Free-Spirited Yogis Still Need Solid HR Systems

Before opening the studio, my background was in Human Resources. I quickly realized that while a yoga studio is a fluid, casual work environment, your team still needs structure to thrive.

We bridged the gap between yogic freedom and business clarity by implementing consistent communication loops. We use a dedicated WhatsApp team chat for quick updates, send out bi-weekly newsletters to keep everyone aligned, and provide structured training and constructive feedback.

When teachers feel supported by clear systems, they can show up fully and authentically for their students.

5. Your Dreams Are Silly—Follow Them Anyway

The yoga industry is evolving past superficial, athletics-only practices. It is deeply humbling to be part of a modern wave of studios that center community and actively work to live the principles of yoga off the mat.

Banana Yoga started as a quirky vision of a welcoming, community-first sanctuary. If I had listened to every traditional business critique, we wouldn't be here today. If you have a dream that feels a little too idealistic or "silly" to the rest of the world, follow it anyway. The world needs more spaces built from the heart.

Thank You, Oakland! 🍌✨

To every single person who has breathed, sweated, donated, or cheered us on over the last three years: thank you. We are here because of you, and we can't wait to keep growing together. Come celebrate with us in class this week!
