As Latino American Heritage Month unfolds, we at Banana Yoga are taking a moment to pause, reflect, and celebrate the incredible power of our community.

This year, through our donation-based classes, our community came together to raise $1010 for the Social Justice Collaborative (SJC)—an organization dedicated to providing free and low-cost legal aid to immigrants.

When we step onto our mats, we often talk about connection, belonging, and freedom. Seeing those values turn into real-world support for our neighbors has been nothing short of inspiring.

The Philosophy: May All Beings Be Happy and Free

At its core, yoga teaches us Oneness—that our well-being is inextricably bound to the well-being of those around us. In Sanskrit, we often chant:

Lokah Samastah Sukhino Bhavantu

"May all beings everywhere be happy and free, and may the thoughts, words, and actions of my own life contribute in some way to that happiness and to that freedom for all."

When you look at the mission of the Social Justice Collaborative, the alignment is unmistakable. SJC envisions a world where “every person has what they need to live a full life, freely, safely, and on their own terms. Where no one is caged, expelled, or denied the right to belong.”

By supporting SJC, we aren't just practicing yoga as an exercise on a mat; we are taking our practice off the mat and putting our collective intention into action.

Why "Banana Yoga"? A Story of Heritage and Resilience

For me, as the owner of Banana Yoga, this celebration is deeply personal. My Latino heritage is woven into the very identity and name of our studio.

Growing up around banana trees, I was always struck by their incredible nature. Bananas are ubiquitous across the Southern Hemisphere, but more than that, they are remarkably resilient. They are almost impossible to get rid of—constantly regenerating, sending up new shoots, and giving life again and again. Much like the myth of the phoenix, banana trees embody rebirth, persistence, and an unshakable root system.

That spirit of resilience is the same spirit we see in the immigrant community, in our yoga practice, and in the diverse family that walks through our studio doors every day.

The Power of the Open Door

One of the most beautiful aspects of our donation-based classes is that they are a gift in both directions.

When financial barriers are removed and there is no minimum donation required, something magical happens: the room fills with an extraordinary diversity of people. We get to practice side-by-side with neighbors from all walks of life, reminding us that yoga belongs to everyone. The energy in those classes is palpable—a shared space of warmth, inclusivity, and quiet strength.

The Journey Continues: Joining Us in September & October

Raising $984 is a beautiful milestone, but our commitment to justice, equity, and community doesn't end here.

We are excited to announce that we will continue hosting donation-based classes in support of the Social Justice Collaborative throughout September and October.

Whether you can give $1 or $50, or simply bring your presence and breath to the room, you are welcome here. Together, we will keep growing, regenerating, and standing up for the right of every person to belong.

Thank you for showing up, moving with purpose, and being the heart of Banana Yoga.

See you on the mat!
